The Colorado Municipal League, an organization representing approximately 270 cities and towns across the state, announced its formal opposition to Amendment 82 ahead of the November election.
In a statement, General Counsel Robert Sheesley stated that the proposed constitutional amendment would restrict the ability of local governments to adopt and enforce energy-efficient building codes. Sheesley also stated that the measure would inappropriately expand the state constitution beyond its role as a fundamental framework for governance.
The Colorado Municipal League joins Counties & Commissioners Acting Together, more than 20 organizations, and over 70 state lawmakers, candidates, and local officials in advocating against the measure. Opponents, including legislative leaders Senate President James Coleman and House Speaker Julie McCluskie, have raised concerns regarding municipal authority and the potential financial and legal impacts on local communities and utility ratepayers.
