New Mexico Local News Fund Convenes Summit on Media Sustainability

The New Mexico Local News Fund hosted its 2026 summit, titled "Local News in a Digital World: Navigating the New Information Era," at UNM Continuing Education in Albuquerque. The two-day national gathering convened journalists, educators, technologists, and philanthropic partners to address the future of local and community information systems.

The summit program examined key operational and editorial issues facing local media, including artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, sustainable funding models for rural newsrooms, and civic engagement through community storytelling. Additional sessions focused on expanding multilingual news access, developing student media initiatives, and adopting innovative and non-traditional publication formats. To broaden access to the event, organizers offered travel and registration stipends of up to $250 for participants requiring financial assistance.
